Day 4 of the 30 Characters challenge. Trying to catch up here's LimeLite! LimeLite is leader of the "Bling Brigade" and is always at odds with our more grass roots Hip Hop protagonists...  whom i have mostly yet to create lol ;) gettin there! He has the power of illumination. He blinds his opponents and bewildering them temporarily. He also can send light charges from his hands as offensive moves or use them to propel him further and faster than he can naturally run or jump.

Thanks for Checkin in! More updates to come throughout the weekend.

Here's # 3 entry for the 30 Characters challenge. I've had this idea for a character for a few days now and have been having a tough time settling on any one sketch. I'm not even 100% sure of this one but it's much closer to what I intended.

These characters will all have a somewhat Hip Hop theme and will take place on earth and in space with a graffiti/underground comic cartoon style. I'm kind of doing a lot of copying of style at this point but I hope to arrive on a style I can call my own eventually.

Thanks for Checkin in! More updates to come throughout the weekend.

Drawing Monsters

I don't know that many artists would argue with me when I say drawing monsters is FUN!!! Why? I'm not sure. Maybe because there are really not any rule's to it. You can kind of just let your imagination run wild. At least that's why I like drawing them. Above you will see some of my favorite sketches I've recently done and they're all monsters or monster related. The monster faces we're days I didn't know what I wanted to draw and I just started with a shape and built from there. For example on the right image I began with the left eye and moved through until I had a whole face. This was inspired by going to a Halloween shop I went to recently.

Getting better at Monsters

This brings me to the idea I have for this weeks SketchDaily Exercise. Now as fun as drawing monsters are I honestly have rarely dabbled in drawing monsters and would like to get better at it. So taking a cue from Chris Oatley of the Paper Wings Podcast when talking about drawing things of a more fantastical nature I'd like to practice drawing some things that are as close a reference to monsters as I can think of. With Halloween coming up soon I think it would be a fun thing for all of us to do. Here are some Ideas of reference images we can look up to help as reference for monsters.

Potential Monster References

- Wrinkled Faces
- Corpse's (as nasty as that may be I bet it would help for drawing zombies)
- Halloween Masks
- Creepy Animals (I'm thinking Lizards, Crabs and Insects Oh My!)
- Baby's and Cute Things (Take something cute and add a horrific element like fangs or claws CREEPY!!!)
- Horror Movie Stills
- Weapons (After all every monster needs the perfect accessories)
- Skulls and Bones

(If you guys think of more let me know and I'll add it to the list! )

So let's get to drawing some monsters!

Picture
"Look to the Sky heed the warning! The Shadow is coming! The Shadow is coming!" Joel the locust man points to the sky to warn all his fellow Earthen creatures that an apocalyptic day is approaching and may already be at hand.

I made this card as I was listening to some music from my Hip Hop crew "Shadow of the Locust" It reflects a common mantra among the "Locust" artist that is born out of a scripture specifically Joel Chapter 2 if your interested. You can find some of our music on Itunes and also my site here at the store section.

The locust character is rendered in copic markers and ink and the background is where i played with oil paints. It reminds me of the contrast between the characters and the backgrounds from old cartoons.

This is an Original one of a kind (not a print) ACEO Art Card on watercolor paper the size of a baseball trading card: 2.5" X 3.5"

The card comes signed on the front and back in a plastic trading card sleeve. Free Shipping within the United States.

Thank You for stopping by! You can purchase this piece and more of my art and things at http://Calmplex.Etsy.com
